Step 1: Sowing Indoors (March – May)
- Fill pots or trays with fine compost and firm lightly.
- Sow seeds thinly on the surface and cover with a fine layer of compost, about 1 cm deep.
Step 2: Water and Germination
- Water gently with a spray bottle.
- Place in a warm, bright location.
- Keep compost evenly moist.
Step 3: Growing Seedlings
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out into clumps (3 – 5 seedlings per pot).
- Keep growing on indoors or in a greenhouse until they’re sturdy.
Step 4: Planting outdoors
- Harden off seedlings for a week (place outside during the day, bring in at night).
- Transplant to the garden or larger containers.
- Spacing: 30 cm between rows, 25 cm between plants.
- Chives are hardy and well-suited for outdoor beds.
Step 5: Harvest (May – October)
- Cut leaves regularly from May onwards to encourage new growth.
- Harvest by snipping leaves at the base with scissors.
- Plants will keep producing throughout the summer and into autumn.
