Step 1: Sowing (April – June)
- Fill pots with fine compost or directly sow in the ground.
- Make shallow holes about 0.5 – 1 cm deep. One hole per starter pot. Or 30 x 20 cm spaced holes in the ground.
- Place a couple of seeds in each hole and cover.
- Firm gently.
Step 2: Water and Germination
- Mist or water carefully to avoid washing away seeds.
- Keep compost consistently moist but not soggy.
Step 3: Growing Seedlings
- Once seedlings are about 5 – 7 cm tall, thin or transplant into individual pots.
- Grow on in bright light until strong enough to harden off.
Step 4: Planting Outdoors
- Harden off seedlings for a week (place outside during the day, bring in at night).
- Transplant into the garden or garden pots or balcony windowbox once frost risk has passed.
- Spacing: 30 cm apart in moist, fertile soil.
Step 5: Harvest (June – October)
- Begin harvesting young leaves and edible flowers from June.
- Leaves can be used fresh in salads or drinks.
- Flowers can be frozen into ice cubes for decoration.
